What is Vedic Astrology?

Introduction to Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology refers to Hindu or Indian astrology. It is a system which originated in ancient India and has been documented by sages in the Vedic scriptures. Also known as Jyotish Shastra, Vedic astrology deals with light patterns that are thought to script our destiny. And this destiny can only be revealed by a Vedic Astrologer.

In this article, we will discuss astrology, the basic principle of Vedic astrology, and how it is different from Western astrology.

What Is Astrology?

Astrology is the science of knowing the effects that planetary movements have on our lives. Based on astronomy, astrologers must have to know the exact position of the planets among the fixed stars at any given time. Moreover, they must also know the exact position of the zodiacal fixed star signs with regards to any place on earth at any given time. Once the astrologer knows the correct positions of the planets and the signs, they can construct a chart representing these positions. Therefore, based on their knowledge, an astrologer can study the charts and offer a wide range of conclusions.

Basic Principle of Vedic Astrology

The basic principle of Vedic astrology is that all things are interlinked. Your fortune or karma is determined through predestined cosmic design. Moreover, it is based on four basic elements that constitute the Earth. These four elements include Earth, Water Air, and Fire. Vedic knowledge has described these elements as the fundamentals of the environment as well as the human body. Fire gives life to the human body. Water represents the water composition of the human body. Air provides life to all living bodies on Earth. Whereas, Earth represents the body itself.

How Vedic Astrology Is Different From Western Astrology?

Vedic astrology differs from Western astrology in a few different ways. However, here are the major differences between the Vedic and the Western system of astrology.

1. Zodiac

The main difference between the two types of astrology is the fact that Vedic astrology uses a fixed zodiac as compared to the moving zodiac in Western astrology.
Due to the gradual tilting of the Earth in space on its axis, when calculating the zodiac from the sun’s relationship to the Earth, it appears to be moving at the rate of a little less than 1/60 of a degree per year. Because of this, the Vedic and Western astrology is skewed from each other by nearly one whole sign.
In simple words, if you believe you have a Sun Sign based on the Western system, the Vedic system will tell you that you do not belong to the Sun Sign. Instead, you are probably one sign back if the chart is refigured using the Vedic astrology. This is the primary difference between the Vedic and Western systems of astrology.

2. Accuracy

Another difference between the two systems is the greater accuracy that Vedic astrology has to offer. For instance, the use of Dashas in Vedic astrology allows astrologers to make a more accurate prediction as compared to Western astrology.
The use of Dashas is unique to the Vedic system. Therefore, giving astrologers a tool for accurately forecasting the changes, trends, and events in one’s life with amazing precision. As a result, Vedic astrologers are not limited to talking about your general overall self. Instead, they can get into your life more deeply and tell you what is going to happen in your life in the near future.
Also, the Vedic system is based on Moon Sign as compared to a Western system that is based on Sun Sign. Sun is known to change the sign in around one month. However, the Moon changes the sign in 2.25 days. As a result, predictions based on Moon are more accurate and close since our circumstances and moods change more frequently.

3. Planets

Another difference is based on the consideration of planets in these systems. For instance, in Vedic astrology, there are nine planets in total. These nine planets include – Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn Rahu, and Ketu. Wherein, Rahu and Ketu are the two nodes of the Moon. In addition, the Vedic system also makes use of 27 lunar constellations known as Nakshatras. Each one of these 27 lunar constellations covers a span of 13 degrees and 20 minutes. On the other hand, the Western system includes planets such as Neptune, Pluto, and Uranus for predicting the future. These planets are not included in the Vedic system. Moreover, Western astrology does not take constellations into account when predicting your future.

4. History

Vedic astrology dates back to time immemorial. It has an unbroken tradition for as long as one can remember. Whereas, Western astrology has a disrupted history. There was a time when it completely disappeared from the European continent, before surfacing again in the late 19th century. The point is that the Vedic system of astrology has a rich and strong heritage. However, the Western system does not have the same kind of advantage.

5. Emphasis

As the Western system relies more upon the placement and movement of the Sun, it places more emphasis on the personality, psychology, and character of an individual. However, since the Vedic system is Moon-based astrology, it covers all aspects of your life.

Final Thoughts

Because the universe expands, planetary movements shift and nothing is still – the Vedic system of astrology is known to be more reliable and rational. Of course, the planets and the signs generally have similar symbolic meanings in both the Vedic and Western systems. But Vedic astrology includes more details and provides greater accuracy in calculations. Thus, making it more reliable.
