namakarana samskara
The birth of a child in a family is an event that provides joy and happiness to everyone involved. The first thing that comes to mind following the birth of a kid is naming him or her.
“Nama” literally means “name,” and “karana” means “to make, to produce.” The Namakaran Sanskar is normally performed within the first 10 days following a baby’s birth. These ten post-natal days are considered unlucky since both the mother and infant are unclean. The home is cleaned and sanctified after those ten days.
At the moment of birth, a certain letter of the Sanskrit alphabet is chosen based on the Nakshatra to be lucky for the newborn. After that, the newborn is given a name that begins with that letter. Typically, the father says the baby’s name four times into his right ear.
The namakarana samskar is also conducted on adult Hindu converts to indicate their formal acceptance of Hinduism. The convert takes a Hindu name to express his devotion to Hinduism and separation from his formal faith. The convert then performs a Vedic fire sacrifice and writes his new name on a platter of uncooked rice.
